Conclusion

There has been an exploding demand for outdoor recreation during the past two decades, and there is reason to expect these pressures to continue. Today, large parts of the nation, like the coasts of Florida, much of southern California, national parks of the Pacific Northwest, and the Barrier Islands of the East Coast, constitute "recreationscapes" in which the prime attractions are fresh air, open space, and water. Recreational considerations have come to pervade all aspects of our lives, from residential decisions to lifestyle commitments.

Rural United States will especially bear the brunt of future changes in recreational demand. Many of our nation's most popular recreational facilities are in rural settings, and recreational expenditures often are the bedrock of local economies.

We can no longer afford to think of outdoor recreation as frivolous activities that command our attention after other needs are met. Rather, these activities have become a major element in many of our lives. It is important that public decision makers be alert to the evolving recreational goals of U.S. citizens, not only to ensure the proper management of recreational facilities but also to instruct social and economic policies at the highest political levels.
